Designing Beyond Borders: A Journey Through Culture, Place, and Landscape

Written By Vincent Aldana

Design has always been more than a profession to me. It’s a way of understanding people, places, and how culture shapes the environments we live in. While my work today is rooted in Las Vegas, my ambition as a designer reaches far beyond any single location.

I aspire to design landscapes around the world—not simply to build projects in different countries, but to learn through design, to experience culture through space, and to allow each place to inform how I think, create, and evolve as a designer.

Design as a Cultural Language

Every culture expresses itself through its landscapes. The way spaces are organized, how people gather, the materials they value, and their relationship with nature all tell a story. From Mediterranean courtyards and Japanese gardens to European plazas and desert oases, landscapes reflect how people live, rest, celebrate, and connect.

Designing in different parts of the world offers a deeper education than books or images ever could. It requires listening, observing, and respecting local traditions while understanding climate, history, and lifestyle. That process shapes not only better designs, but better designers.

Learning by Designing

I believe the most meaningful growth comes from doing. Designing in unfamiliar environments challenges assumptions and forces innovation. Climate, materials, craftsmanship, and cultural expectations all shift from place to place. What works in one region may not translate directly to another—and that’s where learning begins.

Each project becomes a conversation between place and purpose. As a designer, my role is not to impose a style, but to interpret context and translate it into spaces that feel authentic, functional, and timeless.

Why Global Inspiration Matters Locally

Although my ambition is global, the value of that experience shows up directly in my local work. Exposure to diverse design philosophies expands creativity, sharpens problem-solving, and deepens sensitivity to detail. It allows me to design spaces that feel layered, intentional, and thoughtful rather than trend-driven.

The most refined landscapes often carry subtle influences—proportion learned from classical architecture, restraint inspired by minimalist gardens, or material honesty rooted in regional craftsmanship. These influences elevate design without overwhelming it.

Respecting Place Through Design

Designing worldwide is not about replication. It’s about respect. Each environment deserves a response that honors its climate, culture, and character. True luxury comes from restraint, balance, and understanding—not excess.

Whether designing in the desert, along a coastline, or within an urban environment, the goal remains the same: create spaces that feel grounded in their surroundings and meaningful to the people who use them.

A Lifelong Design Journey

I see design as a lifelong journey—one that evolves with every place explored and every culture experienced. The ambition to design globally isn’t about scale or recognition. It’s about curiosity, humility, and the pursuit of deeper understanding through creative work.

Each project, wherever it may be, becomes part of that journey. A chance to learn, to refine perspective, and to contribute something thoughtful to the built environment.

Bringing the World Into Every Design

While my work today is centered in Las Vegas, my perspective is shaped by a broader vision. The landscapes I design are informed not only by local needs, but by global inspiration—filtered carefully through context, climate, and lifestyle.

Design is how I explore the world.
And the world is how I continue to grow as a designer.
